Back to School traditions

(Click on the banner above to get more Works for me Wednesday Ideas!)

Here are some ideas I have come up with for a Back to School tradition...

1. Getting ready early and taking everyone to IHOP for breakfast. (Or recreating their face pancakes at home with cherries/strawberries, whipped cream, and chocolate chips.) You could also go to McDonalds for their yummy cinnamon rolls, or go to a donut shop and get sprinkled doughnuts!

(We opted to make pancakes at home, letting the kids pick out what they wanted)

2. This one is pretty easy: Have everyone decorate a poster board with the date on it and take a picture with it on the first day of school. Repeat this in the same spot every year (changing the date of course!)

3. After picking the kids up from school take them for ice cream and let them tell you about their day. (Or have all the fixings for ice cream at home so they can make their own)

4. I have read about people that are doing a countdown until the 1 day of school. They have their children hang their backpacks on the door when they go to bed. Then the parents leave a new school supply in it for them to find in the morning. This is a great idea but I don't have to buy school supplies for my childrens school, they do it for us!

5. I saw this in Family Fun magazine. If you have a lot of children in your neighborhood get together with the other parents and have a breakfast buffet near the bus stop. The parents and kids can all meet and eat and play together before school starts. Again this would not work in my situation since there are no other school age children on our street!

This is all I could come up with. I saw that Fish Mama over at Life as a Mom had a similar post that was more geared towards ideas for homeschoolers, so you can go check that out as well!

Please feel free to leave any ideas you might have in the comments section!

Read your sock comment about 2 laundry baskets on another site and HAD to comment. My mom helped with laundry after I had my third, and counted 32 lone socks in the basket. I then decided to throw them ALL out, yes ALL of them for five people (I'm married) and now each member of the family has 2 packages (or so) of socks, different styles, that are ALL the same. I don't fold them any more, just sort by style (the 4 year old can do it) and then each member grabs theirs!! Lose one, or get a hole, they still match all the others! Expecting our 5th child, will NEVER go back!

Love the pancakes! Mine would probably never come out that cute.

Last year my son went to preschool three days a week, the last being Thursday, so on Thursdays we would go by Sonic for "Happy Hour" to get 1/2 price drinks. It was kind of a treat on the last school day of the week.

BTW, thanks for stopping by my blog.

These are nice ideas! We always take an apple for the teacher either on meet the teacher/open house night before school starts or on the first day and get a picture of our children handing it to their teachers. We also get a first day picture with the teacher. Then at the end of the first week, we send a "thanks for a great first week" note with a copy of the pictures. Another thing we do is have the teacher fill out a "getting to know you sheet" that we use to surprise the teacher throughout the year with little inexpensive goodies. Usually one per month. This sheet helps with ideas for Christmas and other special occassions such as teacher appreciation week when you want to get something a little pricier. (plus, you get something you know they will like to have because believe me, as a former teacher myself, there are only so many apple related things a person can have!) Things we want to know on the sheet are: birthday, hobbies and collectables, favorite fast food breakfast and lunch, favorite restaurant, favorite dessert, favorite scent, favorite color, favorite candy bar or candy, favorite drink, and favorite snack food. So if a teacher put Twix down as her candy bar, then one day in one month we might send a twix in as a special treat. Or if she really likes a bacon biscuit from McDonald's then we may carry one in one morning. Everyone have a great school year!

Hey "anonymous"! Awesome ideas...I am going to print up a sheet of fav's to give to all their teachers! I had that idea last year and brought it up at the PTA (for all the teachers to fill out) meeting but nothing ever came of it. I never thought of just giving them to my kids teachers myself! And I also never thought about the fast food breakfast or lunch...loving that idea! Thanks!
